Mr Brainwash – Everyday Life
A provocative figure in street art, Mr. Brainwash appropriates images from popular culture and art history and incorporates them into his wry screen prints and sculptures. His colorful texts and iconography reflect the artist’s graffiti-inspired sensibility and undermine his original source material. The artist rose to prominence as the main figure in the 2010 Banksy - directed film Exit Through the Gift Shop. Today, his work sells for up to six figures on the secondary market.
Mr. Brainwash Everyday Life, is a playfully rich composition of Jackson Pollock-esque paint splatters, stenciled forms, and culturally significant imagery. A thoughtful baby chimp looks over its shoulder, brandishing a can of spray paint labelled with a Cambell soup can design (an reoccurring item in Mr. Brainwash’s work). The chimp is perched on a Coca Cola cooler, one of the many pop-culture images of capitalism peppered throughout the work. The entire composition is layered with references to the art world, consumerism, and culture that has dominated our society in the last half a century. This eye-catching and dynamic piece easily captures the wit and brilliance of Mr. Brainwash’s unparalleled style.
